The Centralia Storyline
Welcome to the story that started it all.
Into the Resonance.
In 1979, Pennsylvania Governor Milton Shapp granted a posthumous pardon to John 'Black Jack' Kehoe after an investigation by the Pennsylvania Board of Pardons. The Board recommended the pardon after investigating Kehoe's trial and the circumstances surrounding it.
One hundred years from the start of the terror and violence against the miners in the Centralia region, on Memorial Day in 1962, it was discovered that a mine fire had been set in the mines below Centralia … the circumstances surrounding this mine fire have never fully been uncovered … yet that fire continues to burn to this day, and Centralia is a literal ghost town.
Actual Play
- Our actual play actors are comprised of members of our family and extended family. The story begins with just one but soon incorporates a core group of four siblings.
- Unlike other actual play situations, the actors were given very little information about their characters, requiring them to interact with the world to discover what powers they had.
- By dropping them into situations, the actors made choices that began to frame who and what their characters were. In this sense the story is very much a mystery for them to solve.
- What's fun about an actual play style is the randomness that a dice role brings, and the fact that lines are delivered in the moment. The gaming mechanics are a home-brew version of the Powered by the Apocalypse system.
Story Elements
- This story is initially set in the 1980's in the small real-world town of Centralia, Pennsylvania, the site of a historic mine fire that devastated the town.
- A supporting audio drama called, The Resonance, links modern day events to a dark 100 year old past, that is alo based on historical occurences.
- A modern day map of Centralia was used, and character names were selected based on historical events, though some roles were gender-swapped.
- The Centralia storyline and the Resonance are Science Fiction at their core, investigating the theories surrounding the concepts of Morphic Resonance and Quantum theory.
